The firm of Malpas Stallard Limited (Wine Merchants), presently under the directorship of Nigel and Jeannie Smith, is an amalgam of two ancient wine companies trading in Worcester city centre, Joseph Malpas and Company and Josiah Stallard and Sons.

.

Established in 1807, Joseph Malpas and Company traded from 63 High Street until 1848 when the business was transferred to the large cellars of the newly erected Corn Exchange in Angel Street.   Nigel Smith’s family connection with Joseph Malpas and Company dates from 1895 when his grandfather Stephen Smith took over the firm until his death in 1931, when Nigel’s father Cyril Smith became sole proprietor and “took on the reins” for the next 60 years!   Nigel joined his father in the business at the age of 17 and now has over 40 years experience in the Wine Trade.

The earliest record of the Stallard family’s wine-trade connection in Worcester is of a Thomas Stallard supplying sacramental wine to the Cathedral in the reign of Henry V11.   The firm of Josiah Stallard and Sons was founded in 1808 when William Stallard took over the wine business of Mary and Lucy Hooper, trading from the vaulted cellars and extensive premises bordered by, High Street, Copenhagen Street and Fish Street.

.

In 1969 the cellars and offices of Joseph Malpas and Company in Angel Street were sold and the business transferred to the historic premises of Josiah Stallard in Fish Street, thereby amalgamating the two famous Worcester names into Malpas Stallard Limited which continues to this day as traditional wine merchants, offering  experienced personal service to a loyal wholesale and retail clientele.
